tiling over existing tiles

I have a kitchen with ceramic glazed tiles installed about three years ago. Problem is that they are so slippery that I ended up covering them completely with two large oriental rugs coverage of 20' X 12'. I even slipped and dislocated my knee at one time. Can I just replace the tiles by installing rougher surface tiles on the existing ones since the subfloor is about three inches thick of thin set mortar? I know that I may have to chip the surface or remove these tiles completely - but is looking for a faster and easier way!!
